DIY Scrub for Acne and Oily Skin

When you think of cranberries, skin care is probably not your first thought. We often only think of cranberries during the holiday season.

But did you know cranberries can be one of the best things to use on your face? Not only is it a great anti aging fruit to consume because of it's antioxidant content, it's also great for acne and oily skin.

It contains B vitamins, vitamin C and loads of antioxidants to protect our skin from all sorts of environmental factors.

It also has collagen, which helps make skin look more young and radiant. Our collagen starts dwindling as early as our 20's so as we begin to approach our 40's and 50's, we'll need all the collagen we can get. Collagen is what gives skin that elastic, supple, youthful look. We obviously can't fight the ticking clock, but we can incorporate more natural ways to introduce  collagen back into our bodies.  (Vital proteins is great source of collagen in powder form you can add to smoothies, coffee, almost anything. Tip: get collagen not gelatin. gelatin will "gel". collagen will not).

So I've got 2 great DIY masks for you to make at home and you can even use this formula for any mask you want to do at home. This helps us start to move away from harmful chemicals in skin care products such as parabens (preservatives), phthalates, and fragrance. When buying safer options are not in your budget, getting savvy at DIY is the next best thing.

Ridding the toxic chemicals from our personal care products is vital to overall health. One ingredient that is widely used in products to prevent bacteria, yeast, and mold growing are phthalates. These preservatives have shown up in large amounts in breast tissue from women who had breast cancer and choose to have mastectomies. When our bodies don't know what to do with the toxic load, it resides in our fatty tissue. And science shows a breast cancer diagnosis is mostly environmental today. Read more about that in my "Natural Ways to Clear Acne" article.

While we all don't want that stuff growing in our products, there are safer preservatives companies can use. Or you can make your own products. It just won't last as long and needs to be made in small batches or for one time use.  Here is where convenience plays a part in finding companies that are using safer preservatives.

If you are just now switching to a more natural approach to skin care or this is news to you, start small and start with one product if it feels overwhelming. Or if you're like me, you throw out batches of product at a time and replace with safer. Skin care was my first thing to switch and then I moved to makeup. Now, I'm replacing all my nail polish with Cote. I just threw away probably 20 bottles of nail polish!

I hope you enjoy this DIY mask. If you're brave, try and tag me on social media. I would love to see it!

DIY Cranberry Scrub

1/4 cup muddled or pureed cranberries
1 T course substance like coffee grounds or brown sugar
1-2 T oil such as castor or jojoba or olive

Mix all together and rub on the face. Add more of any ingredient if needed. There's no perfection here. This can be a bit messy so I recommend in the shower. Use a washcloth to remove.

You can also blend up dry oatmeal. Add to cranberry juice or pulp and add your sugar and oil for another great exfoliant.

I would recommend oatmeal for sensitive skin and coffee grounds for regular skin.

Follow this up with a safe moisturizer or a Vitamin C facial oil for added benefits, moisture, and anti aging benefits. If you're looking for a preservative free moisturizer or day cream, this is a great one. Countermatch day cream biomimics or matches your skin's needs all with plant derived ingredients.

Beauty Products are extremely under regulated in the United States. More than 80,000 chemicals have been introduced into the market place since World War 11 and less than 10% have ever been tested for safety. And most of those are used in beauty products.
